Adoption is the third image in a series of four illustrations inspired by the novel Death and the Penguin by Andrey Kurkov. This darkly comedic story of a Ukrainian writer who unwittingly becomes involved with the mafia has been re-imagined from the perspective of his pet penguin, Misha. Misha starts as a refugee from a bankrupt Kiev zoo, gradually develops an adoptive family, and falls seriously ill. With the novel's backdrop of murder and corruption, Misha is a vulnerable and humanising element.
The novel begins with the writer, Viktor, and Misha as each other's sole companions, but their family gradually grows when Viktor reluctantly adopts Sonya, the young daughter of a murdered mafia boss, and begins an ill-advised relationship with Sonya's babysitter, Nina. In this image, Sonya draws pictures of her new family, which Nina later proudly hangs on the wall.
This print is available in A4 size (21x29.5 cm). This high-quality digital print has a slight texture, similar to fine watercolour paper.
